Sydney VisLab Research Gallery

Physical Optics Department

The Physical Optics Department is part of the School of Physics at Sydney University. We are currently researching many kinds of experimental microscopy, as well as developing optical theory.

We use Sydney VisLab to produce images of our three dimensional images taken from our microscopes. In addition, we are able to explore aspects of the theory of optics.

Confocal Transmission

This is an image of a thin section of a moss leaf, rendered using VoxelView. It was one of the first images taken in confocal transmission mode on our experimental microscope. Confocal transmission microscopy at close to diffraction-limited resolutions is unique to our Department. This research team is lead by Carol Cogswell (cogswell@physics.su.oz.au).

Fibre Optic Confocal Microscopy

Integrated circuit

Biological sample

A team led by Min Gu is developing a new type of confocal microscope using fibre-optics for the beam path. These are two of the first 3D images taken with this microscope. Currently the microscope is using reflection mode, but planned is the addition of a new interference mode.
