The purpose of app-of-the-day is to introduce students to apps the may not have heard of or used before. Ideally these should be of some relevance to their day-to-day vislab experience.

Secrets pane: To reveal hidden settings in Mac OS X.
LaTeXiT: Generate latex on the fly (especially useful for inserting equations into drawing apps). The generated output can be dragged and dropped into other applications as a file in formats pdf, eps, tiff, png, jpg. Mac OSX.
Darik's Boot and Nuke: For hard disk secure format.

Dia(Windows/Linux): Program for drawing charts and diagrams.

Microsoft Security Essential: Very fast and lightweight anti-virus.
Synergy Plus: Sucessor to Synergy. Sharing keyboard and mice across computers.
cups-PDF: For the Adobe Acrobat Writer lovers
