Presentations at OzVis'01 Wednesday 12 December
Dr Robert Gingold and Drew Whitehouse from ANU started the first meeting in visualisation in Australia: OzVis'01.

Bernard Pailthorpe, Ben Simons and Nicole Bordes presented their work along with researchers from the University of Queensland, RMIT, ANU.

OzVis'02 will be held in Sydney for the 10th anniversary of VisLab.

Vacation scholarships in VisLab Monday 3 December
Five students will join VisLab this summer under the vacations scholarship scheme.
  • Shelley Wickham (2nd year math and physics) will work on the high resolution display;
  • Richard Brickacek (3rd year science) and Nathan Ford (3rd year computer science) on 3D imaging of the liver;
  • Scott McMillan (1st year computer science) will implement graphics software for multiple displays;
  • Chris Ormerod (2nd year math and physics) will work on archetype analysis.

    Bernard Pailthorpe and Nicole Bordes presented their work at the University of Queensland (dept of Mathematics) and James Cook University - Townsville (dept of computer science).

     
    Archaeology presentation at Sydney Tuesday 27 November
    Professor Roland Fletcher gave a presentation on Angkor at VisLab ATP. The Vice Chancellor Gavin Brown opened the presentation with a few words.

    Darren Kelly joins VisLab Monday 26 November
    Dr Darren Kelly has joined VisLab on a part-time basis. He will work on interfaces between humans and computers.
     
    Dr Mike Pike in VisLab Thursday 22 November
    Dr Mike Pike, director of the Molecular Graphics Laboratory at the Scripps Research Institute visited VisLab on his way back to the USA.
     
    SC Global November 14-16
    VisLab was one of the access grid nodes participating to SC Global. The Access Grid linked sites on six continents with SC Conference held at Denver.
    The VisLab node tuned in to the technical program in Denver. Researchers from several universities in Australia met in VisLab to present their own work and participate in panel discussions to the rest of the world.

    Presentation at Charles Sturt University Monday 29 October
    B. Pailthorpe gave a talk at the workshop organised at Charles Sturt University in Bathurst.

    Bernard Pailthorpe and Nicole Bordes presented their work on the high resolution display at the Asia Display / IDW'01 conference in Nagoya. The paper is entitled "High resolution display with uniform illumination". Click here for more details.
     
    Work experience student 8 - 12 October
    Michael Isidro from Sydney Boys High School did his work experience in VisLab. He worked on archaeological data and made a web site.
     
    Nicole Bordes joins VisLab Monday 1 October
    Dr Nicole Bordes joined VisLab as a senior lecturer. She will be teaching the Scientific Visualisation 3 class and will work on the high resolution display.
     
    Frank Gilfeather visits VisLab Monday 8 October
    Dr Frank Gilfeather, Executive Director of the High Performance Computing Education and Research Center at the University of New Mexico visited VisLab to talk about among other things education programs between his center and VisLab.
     
    Presentation by Chris Ormerod at HPC Asia September 24-28
    Chris Ormerod presented his work "Characterising coupled map lattices" with co-authors Bordes and Pailthorpe at HPC Asia. Click here for more details.
     
    Carl Kesselman in VisLab Friday 28 September
    Carl Kesselman from USC/Information Sciences Institute, also known as infoman and father of Globus came to VisLab.
     
    Peta Seaton MP in VisLab - ATP Thursday 27 September
    Peta Seaton MP, Shadow Minister for the Environment visited VisLab.
     
    Prof. P. Eades gives a lecture in VisLab Wednesday 12 September
    Prof. P. Eades from Computer Science at USyd gave a lecture to the SV3 students on his research in information visualisation.

    Access Grid virtual meeting Tuesday 11 September
    As part of the testing of the Australian node in VisLab, a virtual meeting was held between Manchester - UK, Fairbanks - Alaska, Beijing and Sydney.

    Prof. Bernard Pailthorpe gave a lecture to the Australian Museum Royal Society on trends in scientific visualisation.
     
    Showcase on computer simulation and virtual environments organised by Bernard Pailthorpe Friday 31 August
    The showcase on computer simulation and virtual environments will feature short five-minute presentations from researchers of the university of Sydney as well as open forums. Discussions will conclude the day.

    Dr Kieran Larkin gives a lecture in VisLab Friday 31 August
    Dr Kieran Larkin from Canon Australia gave a lecture to the SV3 students on his research in image processing.
     
    First Access Grid in Australia is in VisLab Wednesday 29 August
    The first Australian Access Grid became operative in VisLab.

    Workshop: Introduction to the APAC National Facility 2 Sessions only. 23-24 August
    Sydney VisLab. Suite 111. National Innovation Centre. Australian Technology Park. Eveleigh NSW 2006.

    The aim of this course is to introduce prospective users of the APAC National Facility to the procedures and options for achieving maximum benefit from using the Compaq Alphaserver SC. The course will be run in two sessions of 3 hours each with the second session covering the more advanced topics of parallel programming and debugging and profiling. Topics to be covered are as follows and much of this material will be presented as "hands-on" exercises for practical experience.

    Topics include: Applying for accounts, Logging in and Environment, Compiling and linking Fortran, C and C++ programs, Using the batch queuing system, Filesystems, I/O on the SC, Using the Machine in Parallel, Debugging and profiling.

     
    Horst Kiechle 23 August
    Horst Kiechle was successful in his application to the New Media Fund of the Australia Council for the Arts. The Fellowship will fund Horst's research activities for a period of two years starting in January 2002. Sydney VisLab will host the Fellowship.
    The proposed research has the working title "Subliminal Structures". It will investigate how the shapes, patterns and structures of the built environment might influence people within it.

    Steve Reinsch from JVC came to work on the new high resolution display being built at VisLab Physics.
     
    Scientific Visualisation III class starts 1st August 2001 Wednesday 1 August

    The number of students enrolled in SV3 was so large that two lab sessions had to be scheduled.

    The SV3 timetable for 2001 is:

    Lectures:
    Wednesday: 8-9 am in LT1
    Friday: 1-2 pm in LT1

    Labs (choose 2 hours from):
    Tuesday: 12-3 pm in VisLab
    Wednesday: 9-11 am in VisLab

    Prof. B. Pailthorpe was invited to talk at the SciCode'01 conference in Vancouver, BC.
     
    Professor Greg McRae visits VisLab 12-13 July
    MIT Bayer Professor of Chemical Engineering Greg McRae visited VisLab and gave a few lectures at the University of Sydney.
     
    William Bleha visits VisLab 12-18 July
    William Bleha, Vice President of Engineering at JVC visited VisLab to talk about the high resolution display being built in VisLab Physics
     
    Dr Amy Braverman visits VisLab Wednesday 11 July
    Dr Amy Braverman, statistician at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California visited us. She was interested in talking about scientific visualization of large-scale visualisation and multi-angle, multi-spectral remote sensing data.
     
    International Science School 4-11 July
    VisLab was part of the centers the the ISS students visited. Under the guidance of Steve Manos and Chris Ormerod they solved some mathematics problems using Matlab.
     
    Presentation at the American Physics Society 25 - 28 June
    Prof. Pailthorpe was invited to talk at the American Physics Society conference in Boston.
     
    NSW Rural Fire Service visit Wednesday 6 June
    NSW Rural Fire Service visited VisLab ATP to gather an understanding of the concept of immersive visualisation to assist them integrating it with their future training developments.
     
    VisLab work featured at APAC opening Tuesday 15 May
    Some of the work done in VisLab was featured at the APAC opening in Canberra.
     
    Seminar at Canon Research Australia Tuesday 24 April
    B. Pailthorpe gave a seminar on scientific visualisation to the the imaging group at Canon Research.
     
    Bob Sinkovits 20 April - 2 May
    Bob Sinkovits from the San Diego Supercomputer Center came to teach a class on parallel comnputing, COMP 4601.

    Seminar: Java based GUI for Scalable Vis Tools. Thursday 12 April
    Alex Decastro from the San Diego Super-computing Center (UCSD) will talk about a project he's been working on: the Multi-Mesh Viewer Software Application at VisLab-ATP on Thurs 12 Apr. 11am.

    The Multi-Mesh Viewer supports interactive viewing of multi-modal, multi-resolution volume data. It allows users to interactively view and manipulate large-scale volume data, then generate volume rendered images.

    The Multi-Mesh Viewer integrates with the NPACI Scalable Visualization Toolkits to access large-scale volume data. In particular, it uses the Mesh Toolkit to scalably access mesh data. The Multi-Mesh Viewer also interfaces with the VISTA Volume Renderer to generate volume rendered images.

    The client is implemented as a Java application to run on any platform that supports the Java Runtime Environment (JRE 1.3) and Java3D. Current implementations exist for MS Windows and SGI Irix.

     
    VisLab Animation on TV Monday 19 March
    We've just heard that the The Revolution in Communications (about Photonics in Australia) will be broadcast on SBS TV(Channel 28) on the 9th of May at 3pm. It includes over 6 minutes of computer animation, produced here at VisLab.
     
    xgraph Wednesday 14 March
    A new version of xgraph into /usr/local/bin. The old xgraph is now called "xgraph.old".
    The new version has been compiled with "-mips1", which means that it will run on any sgi. xgraph.old is "mips2" which means it wouldn't run on the purple-boxes (indigo's).
     
    Work experience students Monday 12 March
    Two high school students Joey and Edward started their work experience in VisLab. They worked on the web page of the Physics workshop.
     
    Presentation at the School of Physics, University of Sydney Monday 12 March
    Professor Bernard Pailthorpe and Dr Nicole Bordes gave a seminar "scalable visualisation of galaxies, oceans, brains" at the Monday colloquium.
     
    Presentation to the department of Chemistry, USyd Friday 9 March
    Prof. Pailthorpe gave a seminar in the department of inorganic chemistry at the University of Sydney about VisLab and its role in the University.
     
    SciLab Friday 9 March
    SciLab is now installed in /apps/scilab. You can run scilab by typing: scilab
    SciLab has also been added to the Applications Menu of the vislab system toolchest.

    Scilab is a scientific software package for numerical computations developed at INRIA. For more info, go to the Scilab web site.

     

    Record Number of Students for Scientific Computing III Class

    22 science students enrolled in the Scientific Computing 3 this year. The demand was so large that two lab sessions had to be scheduled.

    Melinda Rackham wins an award at the Stuttgart Filmwinter Festival in Germany Thursday 25 January
    Melinda Rackham, a Vislab user whilst finishing her PhD at the College Of Fine Arts and having started working on 'Empyrian' here at Vislab won the SoundSpace award for 'empyrian' at the Stuttgart Film Festival in Germany.

    New Equipment Monday 15 January
    VisLab ATP lab is upgraded with new SGI O2's.
     
    Harry Ammons Monday 8 January
    Harry Ammons from the San Diego Supercomputer Center visited VisLab to talk about developments at SDSC on the access grid.
     
    RIEF Grant 2001 January
    Sydney VisLab was awarded $550,000 by ARC to build several displays including a high resolution display, in collaboration with UTS, UNSW and UWS.
     
    Vacation scholaships Tuesday 2 January
    Two students have started work in VisLab with a vacation scholarship. Chris Ormerod, 1st year physics and maths student is working on spatial chaos; Vicky Safouris is working on the visualistion of aerosols in Los Angeles.
     
    New Director Tuesday 2 January
    Prof Bernard Pailthorpe returns as the Director of Sydney VisLab.
