Joining Two Optical Fibres

Because optical fibres are not infinitely long, they must be joined. In addition, it is always easier in practice to deal with short cables than with long cables!

There are two types of joint:

  • the permanent one is called a splice

  • the non-permanent one is called a connection
  •

However, joining two optical fibres permanently or non-permanently is not as easy as it sounds!
