A Simple Model of the Atom
- An atom is made of:
- electrons
- protons
- neutrons
Protons and
neutrons form the nucleus;
electrons orbit the nucleus.
The number of protons is called the
atomic number.
- By convention:
- the electron carries a
negative charge
- the proton carries a
positive charge
- the neutron has
no charge: it is neutral as
indicated by its name
