What is a LED?

A light-emitting diode is a p-n junction that emits light when forward-biased:
  • one side of the diode is a semiconductor of type p (majority carriers are holes)
  • the other side is of type n (majority carriers are electrons)
  •

    Forward bias means that:
  • a positive bias is applied on the p side of the diode
  • a negative bias is applied on the n side of the diode
  •
