During the fabrication of a fibre, small variations of density are created as the glass cools down.
These variations are smaller than the wavelengths used in optical communications and act as scattering objects.
We know from the fizzz of scattering, that Rayleigh scattering is inversely proportional to the fourth power of the wavelength.
Rayleigh scattering prohibits the use of wavelengths below 0.8 µm.
