What is Resonance?

Every system has a natural frequency.
For instance, a person sitting on a swing, without doing anything, will oscillate freely at a given frequency. Suspended bridges are another example.

If you apply a periodic force to the system, for instance if someone pushes the swing periodically, the system is in a forced oscillation mode.

When the frequency of the external force is equal to the natural frequency of the system, energy is transferred to the system and the amplitude of the oscillations is increased; this condition is called resonance
