Refraction at Home


For this simple experiment, you will need:
  • a big transparent jar full of water.
  • a light torch.
  • Put the jar of water on a table.
    Switch off the lights in the room .
    Shine the torch at an angle with the normal the surface of the water.

    What do you see?

    If the laws of physics are still true, you should see that the beam changes direction when it hits the air-water interface: the angle between the normal and the beam of light decreases.

    
    
    Refraction is the bending of light as it passes through substances or materials of different density such as from air to water.

    The bending of the light is due to a change in speed of the wave as it enters the different substance or material.
