A Natural Glass

Glass is a common material which can be found in a natural state in many parts of the world.

The first glass was made by volcanoes and is called obsidian.

Obsidian is a shiny, usually black, translucent material. It is formed when volcanic molten lava comes into contact with water and cools quickly.

Obsidian is mostly made from silicon dioxide (SiO2) with large amounts of impurities such as iron and magnesium.
