Humans have used natural glass to create simple tools for a long time.
It is not well known where and when the first man-made glass was
produced but it is thought to be in
Mesopotamia
(located today in the Iraq/Syria area) between 2000 and
3000 B.C. as indicated
by written records found in this area.
This glass was used as a glaze to decorate objects.
These people discovered that it was possible to use
minerals to
colour the glass.
Glass was also made in ancient Egypt and was valued as much as gold.
Glass making was at that time a very slow process. Glass bottles were made by covering a core made of clay or sand with a layer of molten glass. When the glass had solidified, the core was removed leaving a cavity.
